Blending Hair Extensions Tip 1: Get your colour-matching

Firstly, one of the most important factors in getting your hair extensions to give a natural appearance is to get an accurate colour match to your extensions.

There are hundreds of varieties of hair colours out there with different undertones and mixes of shades so matching your hair extension colour might not be straightforward depending on your natural hair colour. Human hair extensions and fibre hair extensions can appear in different colours even when the same shade due to the different makeup of the hair. To avoid hair blend issues, you can use an online colour-matching service where you can send a photo of your hair in and a team will match you to one of their colours, or you can have a video call with a team when they can colour match you while being able to talk to you and recommend products that will suit you best.

You can also order a sample extension piece that is your closest shade. This means you can judge yourself, at home whether you think the hair is the correct shade for you. This step is so important and can be the biggest giveaway that you wearing extensions if the colour is a bad match.

Blending Hair Extensions Tip 2:  Straight Extensions, Straight Hair

When you have determined your hair colour and received your hair extensions, it’s now time to blend them in with your hair. If you have straight clip-in hair extensions and would like to keep your hair straight too, blending is a little more tricky but can be easily done. Make sure you blow dry or straighten your hair straight. Clip in the extensions to see if your hair and the extensions are the same in case you need to make your hair a bit straighter.

Blending Hair Extensions Tip 3:  Section!

Things you want to make sure are that you are sectioning your hair correctly. You want to make sure that there is enough hair on top of your head to cover the extensions. When you believe you have enough you can go ahead and apply your hair extensions and test if you can see them through the layer of hair.

Blending Hair Extensions Tip 4:  Blunt or Thick

If you have thick, bluntly cut hair or shorter hair it can be harder to blend with hair extensions. We want to minimise the blunt cut to blend in with the extensions. Now to do this you can do two things.

Layering Technique

First, you can layer two extension wefts. This will break up your natural hair and disperse the hair in between the hair wefts. Place one hair extension weft just under the middle section of your head and place the other weft about an inch and a half above the first. This should hopefully break up your blunt cut. Layering multiple straight extensions will thin out your natural hair in between each extension piece, therefore helping the blend of your natural hair with the extensions. The more hair you have to blend in with your own the more likely your hair is to blend more seamlessly with your extensions.

Pin it up

Another thing you can do to help your hair blend especially in straight hair extensions is to put up the under section of your natural hair. To do this you will take the section of hair from the nape of your neck. Split this section into two and braid these sections. Once you have braided the sections you can pin the braids up at the nape of your neck. This makes your hair thinner and not as heavy on your head. This means you won’t have to blend as much hair into the extensions which gives a sleek, blended look.

Blending Hair Extensions Tip 5:  The easiest way to blend

Now we all love something that is quick and easy. The easiest way to blend hair extensions is to add texture! If your clip-ins are pre-styled into waves or curls you will have an easy time blending them. Adding texture makes it difficult to see where your natural hair finishes and where your extensions carry on.

Attach the hair extensions onto your head before you curl your own hair. Curling your hair with the extensions in means that it will be easier for you to create your desired outcome with them in your hair. You can match your curls with the extension curls. Curls are harder to distinguish where they start from which is what makes them so much easier to blend in with hair extensions. Your natural curls will more than likely curl around the extension curls creating a natural blend from root to tip. If you have layers throughout your head with shorter pieces and longer pieces, people won’t second guess if some of your curls are longer or shorter than others.

Note: If you have synthetic extensions that are pre-styled to be wavy or curly, do not use your heat tool on them. Only use your heat tool on your natural hair to create the curl.

Bonus tip when blending hair extensions

Always brush through your hair and the extensions when you have them fitted on your head. Brushing your hair will blend your hair and the extension’s hairs together helping them appear as if they are naturally flowing together. This will create a flawless blend and have people thinking this is all your actual hair!
