The Different Types of Hair Extensions

February 24, 2016

We understand that not everybody knows the difference between the different types of hair extensions available and the pros and cons of each of them, so we're here to help and explain everything you need to know!

Human Hair Extensions

These are by far the most popular choice of hair extensions as they can be treated like your own hair; they can be cut, curled, straightened and styled. They're very versatile and have a good life span, usually 3 months depending on the fitting, after care and the brand of hair extensions – you may find some branded standard human hair extensions are better than others, this is usually down to the amount of processing the hair has undergone at the time of manufacture. Just like with your own hair, human hair extensions need to be cared for with products such as heat protection sprays and Argan Oil treatments to keep them nourished and healthy. Fail to care for human hair extensions properly and they will go dry, matt and tangled, leaving you no option but to buy a new set. Hair colouring is also not recommended for human hair extensions as these have gone through a lot of processing and colouring at manufacture and the results of colouring them again is not guaranteed and could cause damage.

Remy Hair Extensions

Remy Hair is considered to be the finest quality of human hair because the cuticles are kept intact and not stripped, like in most other non-Remy hair extensions. Preserving the hairs’ cuticles and aligning them in a unidirectional fashion creates extensions that are completely natural in appearance. This process ensures that the hair remains super soft, shiny, silky and completely tangle-free throughout its lifetime. These are more expensive than the standard human hair extensions, but depending on the brand can have a lifespan of 9-12 months if cared for properly. The after care for Remy Hair Extensions is the same as Human Hair, with the recommended use of heat protection sprays, Argan Oils and hair masks.

Synthetic Hair Extensions

These are the most affordable range of hair extensions and are usually found as clip ins. These cannot be curled or straightened as they are synthetic fibre and will frazzle and have unrepairable damage. Prolonged wear of these are not recommended, as they aren't suitable for people who wish to wear hair extensions long term with little maintenance. They're much more suited to adding instant volume and length for daily wear or for special occasions. Synthetic hair extensions don’t require a great deal of care either. Washing them is quick and simple, usually with lukewarm water and by rubbing through a mild shampoo and then leaving them to dry. Just remember not to blow dry them as they aren't suitable for using any heated appliances on.

Heat Resistant Hair Extensions

These types of hair extensions are more superior than regular synthetics as they can be curled and straightened to a certain temperature – check the packaging of the extensions you have for guidelines. As these are still synthetic, they don’t require a great deal of care. They can be washed using the same process as the synthetic ones with lukewarm water and mild shampoo.

We provide a great range of the different types of hair extensions, all in a variety of colours, styles and lengths. With this guide to the different options you have, you can hopefully make the best choice for you.
